Quote of the Month

"This whole business of dividing body and mind is ludicrous. After all, the breath that starts the song of a poem, or the symphony of a novel—the same breath that lifts me into the saddle—starts in the body, and at the same time, enlivens the mind." --Gretel Erlich, poet, naturalist, rancher

Practice of the Month

On Breathing

Breathing, the most basic topic. This is the first in a series.

Here is the simplest way of connecting the breath and movement. Put on medium tempo music that is repetitive and non-intrusive. Or be in silence. Sit or stand. Close your eyes. Let yourself quiet down. Observe your breath. Just watch what it is doing. Then let the breath suggest a movement to your body. Just let that happen over and over. The breath suggesting the movement. As you continue on, your movement will shape your breathing, but keep asking the breath to be the guide. Observe the interaction between the breath and movement.

Reflections from Dancemeditation Retreat

"There are times when god stops the clock and everything slows down, this was one of those times. While at the retreat I felt myself withdraw, go inward and turn my focus. Slowly my mind began to clear and I noticed the subtleties of my body that often escape me. The way my fingers moved and when we ingested water I could feel it trickle down the back of my throat and travel into my belly. The pathway of my breath became obvious and I noticed where it expanded and shrank like a bird in flight. I was challenged to move, to stay still and to feel things that made me uncomfortable. I struggled to hear the internal chaos swell -- rise and fall (words have little meaning sometimes). I let the sensations wash over me and my thoughts sped by like clouds. Everything was so new to me that I had no way of making sense of it and yet it made sense to me. I felt like I was returning to a natural sate of being -- the restlessness slowly fading.

I am intrigued by this practice and have found it to bring me back in a strange way. I have always feared being alone -- doing this work has made the unknown within less threatening. I have found a more profound connection with myself. And a temple of peace within."

Testimonials of the Month

"As a dancer I thought I was in and knew my body. Now I realize I had just used it as a tool. I am learning that my body has a voice of its own. I realize I could be much more in my body and that I mentally wander, leaving my body on its own."
-- Charlotte Pettus, dancer, teacher, Sunshine, LA
